The Internet Movie Database, IMDb and abbreviated that can be translated as "Database film on the Internet", is a database online in the cinema world, but also on television and secondarily video games. IMDb restores a lot of information about movies , the actors , the directors , the screenwriters and all persons and companies involved in developing a movie, a TV movie , a television series or a game video. Access to public information is free. A paid service, IMDbPro, provides access to additional information of interest to professionals. IMDb is owned by Amazon.com , but its enrichment and its update are open free of charge to anyone with an e- mail , access to Internet , regardless of nationality, in English only.

The IMDb is the biggest collaborative database in the world, with in early 2009 , information on 1.4 million visual works and nearly 3 million people . In detail, the IMDb offers not only the film credits or filmographies of actors or technicians, but also the synopsis, biographies, reviews, information or budget for the soundtrack, trivia and bloopers, linkages with other films and alternate versions, technical information (duration, screen ratio, width of film, process color, etc..) release dates, etc.. The TV series are widely covered and games video. A dedicated interface displays all known titles of works . Since 2007, the characters are also indexed by name and can ask their filmographies.

General access through the site in English . The interface is very Anglicized partially translated (2009) . The user interface translation into other European languages is also very limited. The works are indexed under their titles in the original language, transliterated into Latin characters according to the most common standard ( pinyin for Chinese). History

The database, established in 1990 by Col Needham , University of Cardiff ( Wales ), was originally a collection of scripts that can be used to search through the FAQ posted in groups Discussion Usenet rec.arts.movies.

In 1993 , a centralized email interface for issuing search the database is created, and in 1994 , this interface is open to input information. The database is then interface with a web initially operated on a network of mirror sites providing the bandwidth. Parallel to this web version, the IMDb was then downloaded in full (with a system of regular updates), the user could navigate through this data using software developed by the community of free software. In 1996 , the project adopts a firm status in the United Kingdom to form the Internet Movie Database Ltd.., and banner ads are added to the website.

In April 1998 , the company was acquired by Amazon.com , the owner yet. A number of founders, including Col Needham, remained managers of the site.

Said Col Needham, February 2008 , the site displays 2.5 billion pages each month and it lists at the same time 55 million unique users .
