Savannah is a city in Georgia , State of south-eastern United States. Founded in the eighteenth century, it now has about 132 000 inhabitants for the town and its suburbs for 343 000 (estimates of the Census Bureau United States , 2009).

Summary

History

Savannah was the first city and capital of the province of Georgia , last of the Thirteen Colonies in Britain. The city was founded in February 1733 by Gen. James Edward Oglethorpe and 120 English and Scottish passenger ship Anne. In July of that year, Jewish families fleeing the Inquisition Spanish and Portuguese have arrived. With an addition of heavy German immigration and Irish in the mid-nineteenth century, and a small Roman Catholic and Protestant immigration from France in the early nineteenth century, Savannah remains even today one of the most diverse and cosmopolitan South. Savannah is located in eastern Georgia , near the border with South Carolina , about 400 miles southeast of Atlanta. The city lies at the mouth of the river Savannah which is the main port. Savannah is the county seat of Chatham.

The city has several universities, including private school Fine Arts (Savannah College of Art and Design) and two public universities managed by the State of Georgia Armstrong Atlantic State University and Savannah State University (the latter is a historically black but built since the 1960s).
